Village Trees and Country Lots
Tree Service in Clinton covers two very different kinds of property. Inside the village, which spans only about 0.63 square miles, the work centers on large, older trees around homes near the village green and the Clinton Historic District. Out in the rest of the Town of Kirkland, about 33.9 square miles with hamlets like Clark Mills and Franklin Springs, the jobs lean toward clearing fence lines, opening up overgrown acreage and dealing with storm damage on wooded lots.
Higher ground, more wind
Clinton sits at about 604 feet, and the Town of Kirkland is listed at about 690 feet, with named high points including College Hill, Crow Hill and Prospect Hill. That is noticeably above Utica's 456 feet. Exposed hilltop and open-field properties catch more wind. During the February 25, 2019 high wind event, the National Weather Service recorded a 53 mph gust 4 miles southwest of Clinton. Trees that grew up sheltered and then lost a neighbor tree, or that stand alone in a field, are the ones that fail first in gusts like that.
Working in the historic village
Clinton became an incorporated village in April 1843, and its center is a park, the village green, where the summer farmers market and the August art and music festival are held. The Clinton Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places. Older homes here often have big trees close to slate or older roofs, porches and stone walks. On these properties we favor careful pruning and sectional removals with ropes, and we keep equipment off lawns and walkways where we can. If your property falls under any local review, ask the village whether tree work needs approval before we schedule.
Out in the Town of Kirkland
The town includes Clinton, the hamlets of Clark Mills, Franklin Springs, Chuckery Corners, Farmers Mills and Kirkland, and the 1,350-acre Hamilton College campus on College Hill. Properties outside the village tend to be larger, and the work is different:
- Clearing brush and saplings from overgrown fields and fence lines
- Removing dead ash from woodlots and hedgerows
- Cutting back trees crowding driveways, barns and outbuildings
- Storm cleanup on wooded parcels after wind or ice
- Stump grinding to reclaim lawn or pasture
Dead ash along hedgerows
NYS DEC reports emerald ash borer in every county in New York except Hamilton and Lewis. Rural hedgerows and woodlots often hold many ash trees, and dead ones along a driveway, road or fence line are a liability. DEC notes infested trees do not have to be removed unless they could fall on a structure or road, which lets owners of larger lots focus spending on the trees that actually threaten something. We can walk the property and mark which ones those are.
Firewood from your trees
If you want to keep wood from a removal, we can leave it cut to length. Keep in mind New York restricts moving untreated firewood of any species more than 50 miles from its source, according to DEC, so wood from your Kirkland lot is best burned close to home.

Clinton and Kirkland Facts
- A historic village center. Clinton was incorporated in April 1843 and is centered on a village green that hosts a summer farmers market and an August art and music festival. The Clinton Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places.
- Higher, windier ground. The village sits at about 604 feet and the Town of Kirkland at about 690 feet, versus 456 feet in Utica. NWS recorded a 53 mph gust 4 miles southwest of Clinton during the February 25, 2019 wind event.
- Small village, big town. The village had 1,684 residents in 2020 on about 0.63 square miles. The surrounding Town of Kirkland had 10,075 residents on about 33.9 square miles, including Clark Mills and Franklin Springs.
- Hamilton College on College Hill. Hamilton College, chartered as an academy in 1793 and a college since 1812, occupies 1,350 acres in the Town of Kirkland and includes the Root Glen, a wooded garden with forest trails.
- Firewood stays local. NYS DEC restricts moving firewood of any species beyond 50 miles from its source, because firewood has been a major way emerald ash borer spread long distances.

Clinton Questions
Do I need approval for tree work in the historic district?
Clinton's historic district is on the National Register, which by itself does not usually regulate private tree work, but local rules can differ. Check with the village before a major removal near a historic home, and we will plan around any conditions they set.
Can you clear an overgrown field or fence line?
Yes. Land and lot clearing is one of our six services, and it suits the larger Kirkland properties. We cut and chip brush and small trees, remove larger trees as needed and can grind stumps so the area can be mowed again.
Is Clinton too far out for storm calls?
No. Clinton is within our regular service area from Utica. After big storms we schedule by urgency, starting with trees on houses or blocking driveways. Call [PHONE] and describe what is down.
Can I keep the wood?
Yes. We can cut it to stove length and stack it where you want. DEC limits moving firewood more than 50 miles from where it was cut, so it is best used on your own property or nearby.
