Pruning That Gets a Tree Through Winter

Tree trimming and pruning is about choosing which branches to take and cutting them in the right place. A good pruning job removes dead and weak wood, shortens limbs that reach too far over a roof, and opens the crown enough that snow and wind do less damage, while leaving the tree's natural shape. A bad one, such as topping a tree or stripping its inside branches, leaves it weaker and sprouting fast, brittle growth.

Why it matters in Utica

Utica averages roughly 102 inches of snow a year, and wet snow and ice add a lot of weight to long, horizontal limbs. After the 1991 Rochester ice storm, researchers found that tree size, branch angle, weak forks and old decay all made damage more likely, and that past maintenance practices had likely made it worse. Pruning ahead of winter targets exactly those problems: overextended limbs get shortened, weak co-dominant stems can be reduced, and dead branches come out before they fall on their own.

Common reasons people call

  • Dead branches in the crown, especially over a driveway, walk or play area
  • Limbs rubbing the roof, siding or gutters
  • Branches low over the driveway or street
  • A tree that drops limbs every winter
  • Too much shade on the lawn or a garden
  • Branches growing toward the service wire to the house

Timing

For many deciduous trees, late winter while they are dormant is a good time: the structure is easy to see and cuts have the spring to start closing. The City of Utica's tree guidance suggests pruning trees that bloom before the end of May right after they flower, pruning later bloomers between January and March, flowering cherries in late summer, and conifers in autumn, and removing dead or diseased wood whenever you find it. We plan around those windows when we can and around storms when we must.

Street trees and wires

If the tree belongs to the City of Utica, the city says no one other than city staff may trim it without a permit, which comes through the Parks Department's Tree Maintenance Division. Branches near power lines are the utility's to clear; utility crews may trim trees that interfere with electric lines. We work on the rest of the tree and tell you if a call to the utility should come first.

What good pruning avoids

Topping a tree, and climbing a tree that is staying with spikes that wound the trunk, both do lasting harm, so neither belongs in a pruning job. If a tree is too far gone for pruning to help, we say so and give you the option of removal instead.

What This Covers

Trimming covers the cuts that keep a tree safe, clear of buildings and in good shape.

Deadwood removal

Dead, broken and hanging branches taken out of the crown.

Clearance pruning

Limbs shortened away from roofs, siding, driveways and walks.

Crown thinning

Selected interior branches removed to let light and wind through.

Crown reduction

Long, heavy limbs shortened back to a side branch to cut snow and ice load.

Tree Trimming & Pruning Questions

How much does tree trimming cost in Utica?

Homeyou's 2026 Utica figures put pruning at about $375 to $525 per job, around $450 on average. HomeGuide's national figures run $250 to $700 for trees up to 30 feet and $1,000 or more for trees over 60 feet. We give a written price after seeing the tree.

Is it okay to trim trees in winter?

For many deciduous trees, yes. Late winter dormancy is a good time to see the structure and make cuts that start closing in spring. Avoid working in deep cold right after an ice storm, when wood is brittle and climbing is less safe.

How much of a tree can be removed at once?

There is no single number that fits every tree. Taking off too much live wood at once stresses a tree and triggers fast, weakly attached sprouts, so a good pruning job removes only what the goal requires, and older trees get a lighter touch. We tell you on the quote how much we plan to take out and why.

Can I trim my neighbor's branches that hang into my yard?

Generally you can cut back branches over your side, but not in a way that harms the tree. Utica's tree FAQ notes that anyone who damages a tree without the owner's permission is responsible for the harm. Talk with your neighbor first.

Should I top my tree to make it smaller?

No. Topping leaves large wounds that decay and sprouts many weakly attached shoots that break easily under snow. Crown reduction, cutting limbs back to a side branch, lowers the height without those problems.
