When the Creek Rises, Trees Come Down
Tree Service in Frankfort often follows bad weather. The village sits in Herkimer County east of Utica, with the Mohawk River forming its northern border and Moyer Creek flowing straight through it on the way to the river. A local analysis of the creek, citing the state's NY Rising plan for the area, reports an estimated 10 to 15 inches of rain in June 2013 and a Moyer Creek bank failure that led to more than 200 evacuees, and describes record flooding on the creek in the Halloween 2019 storm. Floods like those undercut banks, topple trees and leave debris piled at bridges.
The Moyer Creek problem
Moyer Creek drains about 20 square miles, mostly forest and farmland, and runs through the Frankfort Gorge before crossing flat ground to the Mohawk. Moyer Creek was one of 13 streams assessed by engineers after the 2013 flood. According to a local analysis of that 2014 study, sediment has built up in the channel, a timber crib dam just below the Main Street Bridge is likely a driving force behind the ice jams that often flood the area, and the study's 100-year flood flow came out nearly 60% higher than FEMA's 2004 figure. For homeowners, that suggests trees near the creek may face more scouring and ice than older maps implied.
What we do after a storm
1. Make it safe. We start with trees or limbs on roofs, across driveways or hanging over walkways. 2. Clear access. Downed trunks get cut and moved so you can get in and out. 3. Assess what is still standing. Trees with exposed or torn roots, fresh cracks or a new lean get checked before the next storm finishes them off. 4. Clean up. Brush is chipped or hauled, wood is cut to length or removed, and stumps are ground if you want them gone. If a tree is touching power lines, call the utility before anyone goes near it.
Trees along banks and ditches
If your yard backs onto Moyer Creek or one of the drainage ditches in the village, the trees on the bank deserve a look every year or two. Roots exposed by high water, a trunk that has started to lean toward the channel or a tree that has dropped large limbs are all warnings. Removing a bank tree takes planning, because dropping it into the water is the wrong answer and the ground near the edge may not support heavy equipment. We often take these trees down in sections from the yard side.
Ice and snow
The Mohawk freezes most winters, and spring breakup can jam ice along the river. Ice storms and wet snow do their own damage in yards: brittle limbs split, evergreens bend and bark tears where branches break. Fall pruning that removes deadwood and lightens overextended limbs reduces what comes down in winter.
Everyday work, too
Not every call is an emergency. We also handle routine trimming to keep limbs off roofs and siding, removal of dead or declining trees, including ash killed by the emerald ash borer, stump grinding after a removal and lot clearing on the larger parcels in the surrounding town of Frankfort. The village had 2,320 residents in 2020 and about 1,183 housing units at the 2010 census, so most jobs here are on modest residential lots with neighbors close by.

Frankfort's Flood and Village Facts
- Moyer Creek runs through town. Moyer Creek flows through the village to the Mohawk River, which forms the village's northern border. The creek drains about 20 square miles and passes through the Frankfort Gorge on the way.
- 2013 bank failure. Heavy June 2013 rains, estimated at 10 to 15 inches for the month, were followed by a Moyer Creek bank failure that resulted in more than 200 evacuees, according to the NY Rising plan as quoted in a local analysis.
- Ice jams and a crib dam. A local analysis of the 2014 engineering study points to a timber crib dam just below the Main Street Bridge as a likely driver of the ice jams that often flood the area, and reports a 100-year flow nearly 60% above FEMA's 2004 figure.
- A village since 1863. Frankfort was incorporated as a village in 1863 on a site settled before 1807. It had 2,320 residents in 2020, down 10.7% from 2,598 in 2010, on about 1.03 square miles.

Frankfort Questions
A tree on my Moyer Creek bank is leaning toward the water. Is it urgent?
A new or increasing lean, especially with exposed roots, is a sign the bank is giving way. Moyer Creek has a history of floods and ice jams, so a tree in that condition may not last another high-water event. Call for an assessment; if it needs to come down, we plan the removal so the tree does not end up in the creek.
Do you respond after floods and ice storms?
Yes. Emergency Storm Tree Service covers trees on houses, blocked driveways and dangerous hanging limbs. After a widespread storm we handle the most dangerous situations first and schedule full cleanup after.
Can I leave the brush for the village to pick up?
Collection rules are set by the village, so check with the village office about what it accepts. For our jobs we include chipping or hauling of brush in the estimate, so you are not left with a pile.
Should I remove trees near my house before the next flood season?
Only if they are unhealthy or unstable. Healthy trees with good roots help hold soil. We look for decay, root damage, cracks and lean, and we only recommend removal where the tree is a real risk to the house or a neighbor.
