Taking Down Trees Where There Is Little Room

Tree removal is rarely a matter of cutting at the base and letting the tree fall. On most Utica lots there is a house, a garage, a fence or a neighbor's yard within reach of a mature tree, so it comes down from the top: a climber or a bucket truck takes off limbs and then sections of trunk, and pieces too heavy to drop are lowered on ropes. The size of the tree matters, but access, what lies underneath and the condition of the wood usually decide how long the job takes and what it costs.

When a tree should come out

Some trees are clear cases: dead trees, trees with a large cavity or fungus at the base, trees with a split trunk or a fresh lean with lifted soil on one side. Others are judgment calls, such as a healthy tree that is simply too big for its spot, a maple whose roots are lifting a driveway, or a tree that drops limbs every winter. We tell you what we see and whether pruning could solve the problem instead.

Ash trees and emerald ash borer

New York State DEC reports emerald ash borer in every county except Hamilton and Lewis. Once a tree is infested, most ash trees die within two to four years. Dead ash dries out and turns brittle, which makes climbing it and lowering pieces harder and less predictable. DEC notes that an infested tree only has to come down if it could fall and cause harm, such as onto a structure or road. If your ash stands over your house, the driveway or the street, removing it while the wood is still sound is usually simpler than waiting.

Trees near wires, houses and the street

We do not cut near energized power lines; the utility handles those, and we work on the rest of the tree once the line is clear. Over roofs, we rig limbs so they swing away from the house instead of dropping onto it. If the tree stands between the sidewalk and the curb, it may belong to the City of Utica, which says city trees may not be trimmed by anyone other than city staff unless a permit is obtained first. We flag that before quoting.

What happens to the wood

You choose: logs left in rounds, cut to firewood length, or hauled away; brush chipped and the chips left for mulch or taken off site. New York limits moving firewood to within 50 miles of its source, so wood from your yard should stay local. The stump is a separate line on the quote; grinding it can be done the same day or later.

Planning around the season

Winter removals are common here: frozen ground can carry equipment with less damage to the lawn, and the canopy is bare. Deep snow and ice can also slow a job down or make it unsafe to climb. We schedule around the weather and tell you if waiting a few weeks would make the job easier on your yard.

Tree Removal Questions

How much does tree removal cost in Utica?

Homeyou's 2026 Utica figures put a medium tree at about $537 to $728 and a large tree over 60 feet at about $1,000. National guides run from about $150 for a small tree to $2,000 or more for a large one. Access and what is under the tree change the price most. We give a written price after seeing it.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Utica?

For a tree on your own property, the city's tree FAQ does not describe a removal permit. For a city tree, such as many street trees, the city says no one other than city staff may trim it without a permit. Check with the Parks Department before any work on a tree that may be city-owned.

Is a dead tree more expensive to remove?

Often, yes. Dead wood can break unpredictably, so climbing and rigging take longer and sometimes require a lift instead of a climber. Angi notes that poor tree health can add up to about 15% to the cost. Removing a dying tree before it is fully dead is usually easier.

Can you remove a tree that hangs over my neighbor's yard?

Yes, by lowering limbs on ropes so nothing lands where it should not. We may need to step onto the neighbor's side to do it, so it helps to let them know beforehand. Utica's tree FAQ notes that anyone who damages a tree without the owner's permission is responsible for the harm, so be sure the tree is yours before it comes down.

Is the stump included?

Only if you want it. Stump grinding is a separate line on the quote so you can decide. Many people grind the stump the same day; others leave it for later.
