Mature Trees in a Long-Established Village
Tree Service in Ilion often involves trees that have been growing alongside the homes for generations. Ilion was incorporated in 1852, had more than 10,000 residents for much of the 20th century, peaking at 10,199 in 1960, and counted 7,646 in 2020. Census estimates show 92.4% of residents living in the same home as a year before and 66.2% of housing units owner-occupied. A long-established village with long-term owners tends to have big shade trees on the street side, in backyards and along property lines. Those trees need different care than young plantings: careful pruning, regular checks for decay and planned removal when the time comes.
Steele Creek and the village
Steele Creek drains 27.3 square miles, comes down through the Ilion Gorge and runs through the village to the Mohawk River. Its banks are heavily forested through the gorge. The biggest flood on record, on June 11, 1922, put about 18% of the village under water. Ice jams at bridges in 1989, 1997 and 2003 caused trouble too, and the 2003 jam backed water into nearby basements. During the June 2013 flood, according to a basin assessment, large amounts of debris came down the creek and settled in the lower channel. Trees on the creek bank that are leaning, undercut or dead can become part of that debris in the next high-water event.
Checking an old tree
A large, old tree can look healthy from the street and still have problems. During a Hazard Tree Assessment we look for:
- Fungus or soft wood at the base and trunk flare
- Cracks, cavities and old wounds that never closed
- Weak, V-shaped unions between large trunks or limbs
- Dead branches in the upper crown
- Roots damaged by sidewalk, driveway or foundation work
- On ash trees, D-shaped exit holes and woodpecker stripping from emerald ash borer
Then we tell you what we see and what, if anything, we recommend.
Pruning instead of removal
Many mature trees in Ilion do not need to come down; they need weight reduction, deadwood removal or clearance from the house. Cutting back long limbs reduces the load that snow and ice put on them. Raising the lower canopy keeps branches off the roof and away from cars. Pruning at the right points keeps the tree healthy for years to come. When removal is necessary, we do it in sections on tight lots, lowering pieces on ropes rather than dropping them.
Services for Ilion homes
We provide tree removal, trimming and pruning, emergency storm tree service, stump grinding, hazard tree assessments and land and lot clearing. Most of our village work involves residential yards close to neighbors, with the occasional larger parcel at the edge of town or in the hills above the gorge.
Historic houses, careful work
Ilion has several places on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Thomas Richardson House, the Remington Stables and the First United Methodist Church. If your home is historic or simply old, it may have slate, original trim or older chimneys that call for extra care when limbs come down near them. We plan the drop zone and rigging around those features.
Estimates
Call (315) 743-5662 to schedule a visit. We look at the tree or trees you are concerned about and give you a free written estimate that lists each tree, the work to be done, cleanup and stump grinding as a separate option. Prices vary with size, condition and how much rigging the site requires.
Ilion Facts for Homeowners
- Long-term owners. About 66.2% of Ilion's housing units are owner-occupied, 92.4% of residents lived in the same home a year earlier and the median owner-occupied value is $108,700 (Census ACS 2020 to 2024).
- An older village. Ilion was incorporated in 1852, is one of only twelve New York villages still incorporated under a charter and peaked at 10,199 residents in 1960; it had 7,646 residents in 2020.
- Steele Creek's flood record. Steele Creek drains 27.3 square miles. Its greatest known flood, on June 11, 1922, inundated about 18% of Ilion, and the June 2013 flood carried large amounts of debris into the lower channel.
- Ice jams at village bridges. The Steele Creek basin assessment records ice jams at Ilion bridges in March 1989, January 1997 and January 2003, the last one backing water into nearby basements.

Ilion Questions
My big maple looks fine. Why would I need an assessment?
Decay often starts out of sight, at the base, inside the trunk or at old pruning wounds. On an old tree over a house in Ilion, a check every few years can catch a weak union or hollow section before a storm finds it. If the tree is sound, we will say so.
What should I do about trees on the Steele Creek bank behind my house?
Have dead, leaning or undercut trees looked at. The creek's basin study noted that large amounts of debris moved down the channel in the 2013 flood, and a falling bank tree can add to that. We can remove problem trees from the yard side without dropping them into the creek.
Can a mature tree be saved with pruning instead of removal?
Often, yes. Reducing long limbs, removing deadwood and raising the canopy can make an old tree safer while keeping its shade. Removal makes sense when the trunk or roots are seriously compromised, which we explain after the inspection.
My house is old. Will tree work damage the roof or trim?
We plan every removal around what is underneath. Near older roofs, chimneys and trim, we lower limbs on ropes in controlled pieces rather than letting them fall, and we tell you in advance if anything near the work area should be moved or protected.
