Getting Rid of the Stump for Good
Stump grinding and removal takes care of what is left after a tree comes down. A stump grinder uses a spinning, toothed wheel to chip the stump away a little at a time, down below the soil line. It is faster and far less destructive to the yard than digging a stump out, and it leaves a hole full of wood chips and soil that can be leveled, topped with soil and seeded.
Why bother with an old stump
A stump left in place takes years to rot. In the meantime it is a trip hazard and a mowing obstacle, it can send up sprouts from the roots, and decaying wood can attract insects. Grinding it out lets you reclaim the space, whether you want lawn, a garden bed or a new tree nearby.
How deep we grind
Standard grinding goes about 4 to 6 inches below ground, which is enough for lawn. If you plan to plant a tree or shrub, build a patio or set a fence post nearby, we can grind deeper, up to around 18 inches, which takes longer and costs more. Tell us your plans for the spot when we quote.
Roots and utilities
Grinding removes the stump and the root flare right around it, not the whole root system. Large surface roots can be chased out a few feet if they are in the way. Before we grind, buried utility lines need to be located and marked, and it helps if you point out any irrigation lines, invisible dog fences or lighting cables you know of.
Stumps on Utica lots
Many backyards here are fenced, with narrow side yards and gates. Some stump grinders fit through a standard gate; larger stumps may need a bigger machine. We look at access during the estimate. If the stump is in the strip between sidewalk and curb, it may belong to the City of Utica, which handles its own street trees, so check with the Parks Department before anyone works on it.
The chips
Grinding leaves a pile of wood chips and soil several times bigger than you might expect. You can keep them as mulch, use them to fill the hole, or have us haul them away. Chips settle as they decay, so a ground-out spot used for lawn usually needs topsoil on top before seeding.

How It Works
1. Measure and look at access
Stump diameter, gate width and what you want to do with the spot.
2. Utilities marked
Buried lines located and marked; you point out irrigation or pet fence wires.
3. Grind
The stump and root flare are ground below the soil line.
4. Fill or haul
Chips used to fill, left as mulch, or hauled away as agreed.

Stump Grinding & Removal Questions
How much does stump grinding cost?
HomeGuide's national figures run about $120 to $400 for the first stump and $30 to $60 for each additional one, or roughly $2 to $6 per inch of diameter. Large or hard stumps, tight gates and deeper grinding cost more. We give a written price after measuring.
Is stump grinding the same as stump removal?
Not quite. Grinding chips the stump down below ground and leaves the deeper roots to rot in place. Full removal digs the stump and root ball out, which leaves a big hole and disturbs much more of the yard. For most lawns, grinding is enough.
Can I plant a new tree where the stump was?
Usually it is better to plant a few feet to one side, since the old roots and chips take time to break down. If you want to plant in the same spot, we can grind deeper and you should replace chips with soil.
Will the stump grow back after grinding?
Some species send up sprouts from remaining roots for a while. Cutting or mowing the sprouts as they appear usually ends it within a season or two.
